Activities made from Items around the House

Posted on April 3, 2020September 21, 2020 by myumbrelladay@aol.com

I’ve made some “goody bags” from items that I had around the house and from my crafting supplies.  Here are a few ideas for activities and crafting for young children.

Here’s what is in my bags:

Shaker Eggs (Music)

Place some dried beans or rice into plastic eggs and seal with tape.  I only fill about 1/3 or 1/4, you don’t need a lot.

Model the hand motions of your favorite fingerplays and songs.  Encourage your child to imitate.

Verbally model sounds and words as you sing your favorite songs:  “Wheels on the Bus”, “Twinkle, twinkle . . . “.

Have your child follow directions to place the eggs in a container for clean up and count them as you put them away.

Practice labeling body parts.  Ask your child where to dump the eggs . . . “on my head, on my leg, on my arm” . . .

Tube & Stickers

You can use a paper towel tube or pringles can with the bottom removed.

Decorate the tube with the stickers, crayons, and colored paper.  Use the tube for an “I-spy” game.  Model for your child:

“I see you!”,  “I see ___.”

See what you can find while going for a walk around the neighborhood or your backyard.   Look through the tube and play “I-spy”.

Use as a horn!  Take turns.  Encourage handing the tube back and forth for appropriate social engagement.

Practice some animal or car sounds using the tube.

Use the tube for placing small soft or light toys.  Hold the bottom of the tube until it’s time to dump them.  Say, “Ready, set, go”, or count the items as you put them in.

Starting a New Habit: Engagement Time

Posted on January 31, 2020September 21, 2020 by myumbrelladay@aol.com

Happy 2020!

So it’s the end of January, the month that we all seem to want to make big changes.  For some, the changes are in diets, exercise, or careers.  For others, it’s having the ability to connect and engage successfully with their young child.

We’ve all heard, “Slow and steady wins the race”.  I totally agree but it is a little more complicated than that.

Most of the nutrition experts will tell you to change one small thing about your diet, switching out one food for another, one meal a week.  If we change too many things at once, we set ourselves up to fail because it’s just too difficult.

The same is true for engagement with our children.  Our goals for our children are to change a behavior:  to be more social, to get his needs met more independently, to follow a direction, or to play with a toy as it was intended.  For any of these behaviors, we must start small.

The Importance of Play

Posted on October 22, 2019September 30, 2020 by myumbrelladay@aol.com

“Play is serious learning,”  Mr. Fred Rodgers said it, and many before him felt the same way.  That hasn’t changed.  It will never change. We continue to see the most value in basic toys; the activities where you use your imagination, your hands, your whole body, and your social skills.  The kind of toys that I am talking about are blocks, balls, playdough, puzzles, musical instruments, play food, plastic people/animals, and books!

As the shopping season is before us, I just wanted to take a moment to talk (rant) about the basics and just how important they are.  Remember what I have said before:  If it has a battery, rethink it!  Do you really need another car with lights or another firetruck with a siren?  Get some wooden cars and trucks without all of the sounds, and instead make the sounds yourself!  That is so much more fun (and cheaper).

But, Why?

Happy Fall Everyone!

I hope everyone is excited to begin the fall season with all of its fun pumpkins and cooler weather.

Don’t forget to visit some past blogs that celebrate autumn.

Get out and enjoy some fun with your children after reading, Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Everywhere!

A great indoor activity is playdough in a variety of fall colors.

Read, Fall Fun with Playdough for some inspiration.

Let me know how it goes!  Enjoy!

Modeling during Daily Routines

Posted on August 31, 2019September 21, 2020 by myumbrelladay@aol.com

A major goal for most of our kiddos includes functional language in order to get their needs met within their daily routines.  Children learn language when we model and they imitate.

Use modeling within your daily routines to boost social engagement, language, joint attention, and participation.

Why is functional language so important?

If you have a nonverbal 2-year-old or a child with limited communication, you already know the answer!

When a child has a means to communicate, he has a “voice”.

I don’t mean a literal voice, because the mode of communication could be gestures, signs, picture cards, or another augmentative means, as well as verbal.

When a child has a voice, he can:

  1. make a choice
  2. negate something by indicating “no” instead of having a tantrum
  3. label an item to show common interest and joint attention.

There are a million things I could list here, but I think we all can agree that this is a biggie, as far as importance goes.

When a child has a means to communicate, he has power–he has an element of control within his environment.

Make a Matching Book Activity

Posted on July 27, 2019July 27, 2019 by myumbrelladay@aol.com

Interested in making a matching activity for your child?

Here is a great book that has good pictures and the alphabet too.  I got super lucky with this one because my local library was having a book sale.  I purchased so many books that I ended up getting this one for free!  Honestly, I think the sales lady felt sorry for me carrying a heavy box of books around and ended up giving me some of the books for free.  These books are fairly inexpensive anyway, so find a board book that you like and let’s get started . . .

The first thing I did was wipe each page with a Clorox wipe and dried it.  It had some marks on it and I just wanted it to be clean before I started.  Also, if you look closely, you can notice teeth marks in the upper right corner. I actually didn’t notice this until I was cleaning it, but this doesn’t keep me from making an activity book out of it.  Clean, and keep going!

Make Social Engagement Kits

Posted on June 4, 2019June 8, 2019 by myumbrelladay@aol.com

For most of the families that I work with, the family goals are social engagement, playing with toys appropriately, imitation, tolerating transitions, and appropriate attention-getting skills.

I have posted blogs previously that have touched on these topics.  As parents, you will be modeling verbal and/or signed language during all of your daily routines.  You can engage your child and encourage him to follow directions within the typical every day events and routines that your family experiences. Also . . .

Here are some very specific tips on how to set up your environment for socially engaging with your child in addition to those daily routines.

Making Family Mealtime a Habit

Posted on March 20, 2019June 8, 2019 by myumbrelladay@aol.com

For some families, mealtimes together are only a dream.  Being able to sit at the same table at the same time seems so unreachable.  Some of the families that I work with have made some changes in their habits that have proven very successful in dining together.

If you are interested in having your child eat meals with you or even go out to eat as a family, read on for tips and strategies.

Why is it important to dine together?

Mealtime is a social time when we get together with family and/or friends to share a meal and conversation.  Because ‘social interaction’ is often a goal for our kids, why not work on this goal within the daily routine of eating?  This is a natural time to reflect on the day and have some uninterrupted “screen-free” time to interact.  Having the habit of no devices at the table during meals will place the focus on the meal and the people who you are enjoying it with.  Because everyone is seated at relatively the same height and facing each other, you are encouraging eye contact and social engagement.

Sitting at the table without devices will be a challenge!

Yes, many times it is challenging to change habits when a child has been distracted with a device in order to eat.  If your child has concerns with  eating habits, doesn’t eat much solid food, or has concerns with textures, contact your pediatrician.  Discuss gaining a script for an evaluation with an occupational therapist or speech/language pathologist.  You may also contact your local early intervention program for kids under 3 years.

Does my child need an evaluation?

Posted on February 6, 2019September 21, 2020 by myumbrelladay@aol.com

Many families aren’t really sure where to start when they have concerns with their child’s development or behaviors.  Going to your child’s pediatrician is always a good place to start.  Typically, pediatricians will give you information to be evaluated by developmental specialists, speech therapists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists.  Here are my suggestions:
